What's Yer Brand?

Many good Western novels have been written over the years involving cattle in one way or another. From good ol’ cattle drives to no account cattle rustlers, and everything in between, cows have always been synonymous with the old West. Back in the day, the life-blood of any western ranch was its cattle and if you had em’ you had better brand em’. Like the title papers to your favorite truck, the brand on a cow is proof of ownership. Ranches were known by their brand and when a cowboy rode for a ranch, he rode for the brand. So you can bet there was a fair amount of pride involved in being associated with a certain brand.

Branding cattle was probably the single most important function on a working cattle ranch in the old west. But branding didn’t start there. No, branding livestock has been carried out for thousands of years. In fact, modern day archaeologists, (have found paintings on Egyptian tombs over four thousand years old that show scenes of cattle being branded.

Branding livestock is still done today. A branded cow, or horse for that matter may be a stockman’s only claim to ownership. It’s not only extremely important, these days it’s required by law, in most places, especially if you have cattle on the open range. That’s right, the law requires ranchers to mark their cattle with a registered brand, using a branding iron.

These days, there is another way to prove ownership of cattle. It’s through the practice of ear notching and wattling. It has, over the years, become what’s known as a customary law that is based on traditional usage. But that’s another topic, for now, we’ll stick with branding.

Identifying brands on cattle is usually quite simple, unless of course the irons are applied carelessly or improperly, then it can be more difficult.

Branding is usually done once a year, in the spring after calving.

And that is exactly when this event took place…months ago. Branding is also a time for friends to gather. We had a bunch of them here to help and enjoyed every bit of their company. We spent all day Friday from sunup til sundown. The women are usually in charge of the meals and enjoy watching their men and taking pictures. The kids run around having fun and do get in on a little action especially if it involves “rocky mountain oysters”! The next day the cowboys load up their horses and head on over to the neighbors to do it all over again.

Branding is a time of year, a little event that takes place, one that we all look forward to every year!

End of School

Summer is in full swing and I am barely bloging about the end of school…I am way behind, but trying to catch up!

The last couple weeks of school were filled with concerts, parties, contests and graduations. I really enjoy watching the girls participate, they always do such a great job and seem to give it their all.

SPRING CONCERT

Every year the elementary puts on a Spring Concert. This year the theme was Rockin Around the World. They all sing a bunch of songs together as a group and then each individual class performs twice, once with a musical instrument and the other time they sing a song they have learned with actions. Jeslyn was also a narrator this year. It is always fun to see each grade perform with the instruments. Some of the kids are definitely better than others. At the beginning of the school year in music class each student gets to pick which instrument they would like to learn to play. Jeslyn picked the violin this year and liked it so well that she got one for Christmas and is now taking lessons. On this particular night...Jeslyn wasn't quite ready to perform. She had just gotten a new bow and forgot to rosin it. So it squeaked...She then had to pretend to play. It was kind of embarrassing but funny. We sat on the front row right in front of her and Clay saw her and was cooing and giggling at her...it was really cute.

Our school isn't very big about 12-18 kids per grade. We almost know everyone from either school or church which it makes it fun!

The Kindergarten class didn’t sit on the stage; they waited for their turn in the 2 front rows of chairs. I had a hard time getting a good picture of Jauncee, but I tried.

If Jauncee would have turned towards me I could have had them both pictured =)

MONSANTO SAFETY CONTEST

Every year Monsanto puts on a safety contest and this year Jauncee won first place and received $15.00 and a blue ribbon. Good Job Jaunc!

KINDERGARTEN GRADUATION

My little girl graduated from kindergarten and will be moving on to the first grade. I am sure going to miss my little helper everyday not to mention the special time we get together. Her graduation was really cute. You could tell all the kids were having fun. Jauncee really liked going to school and I was very impressed with her teacher Mrs. Pearson. Jauncee really came along ways since the first of the year.

The Kindergarten Class

We learned our ABC’s

And counting 1, 2, 3’s.

And now we know all these.

The kindergarten class.

We learned how to share

We learned how to care.

Just ask us if you dare.

The kindergarten class.

It seems we’ve just begun

And now we’re almost done.

This year’s been so much fun!

The kindergarten class.

But we must say so long.

With this our little song.

But we’ll be back ‘fore long

The kindergarten class.

CLASS OF THE YEAR

The third grade class was honored this year as the class of the year. They achieved 98 percent on their ISAT tests this spring, which is remarkable. Jeslyn scored in the advanced level on each individual test.

REPORT CARDS

I was very pleased with both of the girls’ grades this year. They both improved every term. For some reason Jeslyn’s report card wouldn’t upload to blogger but she did do a fantastic job. I am proud of both of them and hope they continue to strive for good grades each and every year.
