Around here branding cattle signifies Spring.
Branding season is an important time of the year, not only for cattle health and well-being, but as a time for networking and fellowship with neighbors and friends. We usually end up with more kids than adults, but that makes it fun.
It was a warm Saturday morning of the first weekend in May, when we all got together to gather the herd, sort off the calves, and work the cows. That is when the fun/work begins!
We don't use a calf table, but Clay and Jauncee had to make sure it was still in working order!
In past years, I have helped run the fork, but this year my job was solely lunch! We ate dutch-oven chicken, ranch house beans and salad. I think it was a hit...with no leftovers! Since I was occupied cooking, Jeslyn was in charge of all the little kiddos, including Dakota. She did a fabulous job, with only 1 kid getting hurt, Clay Boy! I think he got kicked by a calf.
Here in this pic below, we have 2 - 3 generations of families working the calves! The Barfuss' and the Johnsons.
Dakota is so sweet and good. You can take her anywhere and do just about anything without her ever fussing at all. Glad she is so happy. My only complaint...I wish she would walk!
My little cowboy taking a break after getting kicked!
My handsome cowboy, who will probably kill me for posting this! But I couldn't resist. Love him so very much!
Any chance Grandpa could be giving some good advice??!!?
Now all the works done, it's time to head to Lava!
So thankful for this beautiful valley we live in, for good friends, good food, and our livestock!
We truly are blessed!
