Getting Ready for the County Fair

Showing a steer at the county fair is no easy task! Jeslyn has been preparing for months, I think she really enjoys it too. Besides feeding them daily, Jeslyn also catches the steers and rinses them and brushes them. The steers really look forward to it, especially on really hot days. After their cool down they get worked in the corral for a bit with the show-stick. This has been a really fun project for Jeslyn, one that she has taken on and ran with.

This is Spud, her State Fair steer!

This is Thunder, her County Fair steer!

For Jeslyn's record book she had to do a presentation to a group of people. This year her leader (Dirk) told her it had to be somebody other than Momma, Jauncee, Grandma and Grandpa. So while we were having a cookout with some friends, she took advantage of their company and gave them a demonstration on how to lead and properly set-him-up for the judge.

She did a super fantastic job!

All-the-while the kids were playing and having fun together. Clay just idolizes boys! He really like following McCaden around for the evening.

Too cute! Seconds on dessert!

About a week and a half prior to the County Fair we headed to Montpelier to get their feet trimmed.

Here the trimmer is explaining to Jeslyn what he is doing and what their hoofs should look like.

While the trimming was going on, Clay decided to wander and explore the surroundings. He came upon a cat with a couple kittens.

He was trying to feed them rocks!

One down, one more to go!

I am really proud of Jeslyn and her desire to show steers! She has taken on the responsibility and never really complains, nor do I ever have to remind her to rinse or feed. Such a good girl!

Her college fund will be happy!
